Cancel insurance after the donated car has been picked up and the title has been handed off, not before. Use the pickup and title-transfer date as the effective date. Cancelling early can leave you exposed if the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss while you still legally own it. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a registered vehicle. If your state requires plate or registration action first, finish that before calling the insurer. Then ask about any prorated refund.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Do not cancel while the car is still waiting for pickup or while the signed title is still in your hands. First, confirm the car has been picked up. Then confirm the title was handed off according to the donation instructions. Your insurance cancellation or change should use the same effective date: the pickup and title-transfer date.
Handle plates and registration
Before you call the insurer, deal with plates and registration if required. State rules vary: some states require plate surrender, registration cancellation, or a notice to motor vehicle records before insurance ends; others do not. If you are not sure what applies, check the Tennessee DMV first. Do this before cancelling so you do not create a registration-and-insurance mismatch.
Call the insurance company
Call your insurer after the first two items are done. Give the donation date as the pickup and title hand-off date. Ask the representative to make that the effective date for the vehicle change. Have your policy number, VIN, license plate number, and donation receipt or pickup record in front of you when you call.
Remove or cancel coverage
If this was a multi-car policy, ask to remove only the donated vehicle. Do not cancel the whole policy unless that is what you intend. If this was your only insured vehicle, cancel the policy effective on the pickup and title-transfer date. If you are replacing the car, keep continuous coverage in mind so your next vehicle is not left uninsured.
Ask about your refund
If you prepaid for the month, six months, or a full policy term, ask whether you are owed a prorated refund for unused premium. Confirm how the refund will be sent and whether any automatic payments will stop. Do not assume the refund is immediate. Ask for the amount, the method, and the expected processing status in writing.
Save written insurance proof
Keep the confirmation page, cancellation email, amended declarations page, or letter from the insurer. It should show the vehicle removed or policy cancelled, the effective date, and any refund information. Save it with your pickup receipt, title-copy notes, and plate or registration records. If a question comes up later, this file shows the order you followed.
Documents to keep together
Build one folder before you call the insurer. Keep anything that proves the car left your control and that you followed the right order. Useful items include:
- Pickup receipt or donation confirmation.
- Copy or photo of the signed title, if you kept one.
- Plate, registration, or motor vehicle records.
- Insurance cancellation or vehicle-removal confirmation.
- Notes from the call, including the date, time, and representative name.

Common questions
Can I cancel insurance the morning of pickup?
No. Do not cancel before the pickup and title hand-off are complete. If the vehicle is still in your possession, on your property, or still legally yours, an uninsured loss could become your problem. Wait until the hand-off is finished, then call.
What if my insurer asks for proof of donation?
Use the pickup receipt, donation confirmation, or written record showing the vehicle and date. If you have a copy or photo of the signed title, keep it available too. Ask the insurer what document they need and request written confirmation after they process the change.
Will I get money back after cancelling?
You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid premium beyond the effective cancellation or removal date. The amount and timing depend on your policy terms. Ask directly for any unused premium, confirm where it will be sent, and get the refund details in writing.
More donation prep guides
The safe order is simple: pickup first, title hand-off first, plate and registration steps if required, then insurance. Set the effective date to the pickup and title-transfer date, ask about any prorated refund, and keep the written proof.
